Absolutely, Bigbama.

Rareseeds.com is Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, one of the seed houses specializing in heirlooms. It was founded by Jere Gettle when he was only 16, and is one of the oldest heirloom specialists in the country.

Jere is also the founder and publisher of the magazine, The Heirloom Gardner, which I had the honor of naming. I also wrote for the first few issues, as a favor to him.

For your purposes, however, I would recommend Southern Exposure Seed Exchange instead, because it specializes in varieties that are adapted to southern growing conditions. You can find them at SouthernExposure.com.

SMAC (Sustainable Mountain Agriculure Center), itself, is a great source of seeds, particular beans and tomatoes, and seed sales help with the work of the foundation. Find them at heirlooms.org.

And don't forget individuals such as myself: Serious seed savers who sell heirloom seed in order to continue preservation efforts. For my most recent catalog, contact me at HistoricFoodways@hotmail.com.

My tomatos are blooming as well as my green beans. Corn is shooting up nicely and my peppers are maturing.

I should pick zucchini and squash this week.
